During these stressful times, more of us are suffering from anxiety and depression. Medications are prescribed that cover up the symptoms, but offer no cure. The leading cause of disability is now depression, taking over from back pain and arthritis.
Anxiety as well as depression is your body’s natural response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear of what’s to come. Research shows that a change in diet can be highly positive. Since stress can be so harmful to both your physical and mental health, it’s crucial to fight it and minimise its devastating effects.
It’s important is to eat more fatty fish containing Omega-3s, the building blocks of the brain. The brain is composed of 60% fat and needs fat as fuel. Found in fresh salmon which also contains vitamin D, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 as well as Selenium. Sardines, Tuna and Mackerel are other good sources. Omega-3s reduce inflammation and are one of the common nutrional deficiencies seen in patients with mental health issues.

According to NHS Scotland, a healthy, balanced diet should include at least 2 portions of fish a week.
